White Background
I bought this kit and there is no white yarn. So it appears that the fabric is the white? I think that I want to cross-stitch in the white. What color of white should I use - pure white or a color close to the fabric?

Either one would be fine, maybe try a few stitches in both, and see which one you like.

if you are using DMC embroidery floss then you could use B5200 which is called snow white or you could use just normal white which isn't as bright, also if you want to you could use Ecru which is a light cream or you can get embroidery floss that combines colours together to give it that extra texture. you can pretty much do what you think would look nice. I mean I know snow is technically white but you don't have to stick to the normal colour if you don't want to. that's what I love about cross stitch. Good Luck with whatever you choose.

If you decide to use DMC embroidery thread B5200, put 1 strand of it and 2 strands of Kreinik 001 white together and cross stitch as one. It would give your stocking a sparkly look to it. I am currently working on a Stoney Creek pattern "Fishing Santa" on which I'm doing that for the water drops as the fish comes out of the water on Santa's hook. Just a stitcher who saw your post. I have stitched 13 stockings to date and on all but the first one I stitched in all the background and what a difference. It gives the stockings a much more finished look. I would so like to re-stitch the first one, but my son doesn't want to replace it since his was the first. I think you will really like the finished product so much better no matter which white you choose.

If you want just a little sparkle, try the white etoile floss.

jaba, you mentioned using the new Etoile floss in white. I was thinking of using that on my current project, but when I saw it at the local cross stitch store, it looks more grey, almost like #762, than white, so I decided against it.
