14 Aida??
I would love to make this project, but the 18 Aida does not please my eyes. Would it work okay to use the 14 count instead?

I would say yes, it would look fine on 14 ct. But, this is a kit. If you purchase the kit and then switch out the Aida for 14 ct, you may not have enough floss. Another choice would be to purchase the kit, and you supply all your supplies (floss and Aida). That though, would mean you are paying the 'kit' price for just the pattern.

Have you ever tried 16 count aida. I switch many of my 18 count Dimensions kits to 16 count aida because it reduces the possibility of a floss shortage more than switching to 14 count and I use the floss supplied with the Dimensions kit but I'm very careful to use the floss sparingly (I have trouble seeing the 18 count as well too). Floss shortages in kits are always possible in the best of circumstances (even when using the supplied material in the kit at the smaller count) so keeping the fabric as close to the size of the supplied fabric is recommended like MarzHere had mentioned. Keep in mind that switching your fabric to 14 or 16 count will also make your stocking bigger, so make sure you order enough material with an extra 3" allowance on all sides for finishing.

Thanks so much for your replies! I have ordered the kit and it will be here tomorrow! Today I'm going to practice with a piece of 16 count and see how that goes. If it goes well, I'll do the stocking in 16 count. If not...I guess I'm off to Hobby Lobby to match the colors with DMC thread and use 14 count. It's for my first great-grandson so I'm going to line it, and do the back of the stocking with material from one of my garments and cross stitch a short message to him on the back. I also plan to do some beading on the front. Can't wait to get started!

Bonnie FYI: There are floss conversion charts available between Dimensions kits and DMC at www.cyberstitchers.com and www.thestitchersvillage.com to make it easier for yourself while shopping at Hobby Lobby.
