My dental and back issues aside, Mabel has managed to get kennel cough. We took her to the emergency vet yesterday afternoon because she was coughing like she had something stuck in her throat. (Since she has a tendency to eat inappropriate things like rocks it was a possibility) She has to have 3 pills twice a day, and she is morally and ethically opposed to taking pills of any kind. This morning I made her a peanut butter sandwich, that worked, but she knew something wasn’t quite right. We shall see if works a second time. Historically I can fool her once, maybe twice if I’m lucky. The pills make her sleepy, so I’ll have lots of time to clean my house, or stitch...

Oh poor baby. I hope she feels better soon. We have two non pill taking pets so I wish you all the best with that. You will certainly need to be creative. Extra pets to Mabel from me.

Hope she is feeling better soon --poor baby. I have tried things like putting a pill in a piece of hotdog or cheese but goofy usually swallow things whole anyways.

Awe poor Mabel. Dante had kennel cough a few months ago. I have no idea how he contracted it. Although the vet said we can carry it to them by being around other dogs who have it. At the time I was working for a dog sitting company but none of the dogs I took care of had a cough. I was worried the puppies would get it since they and Dante live together and romp around and all. Luckily, they never got it. Who knew we could carry it to our dogs or so the vet said!I never heard of that before.

Oh, poor Mabel. I sure hope the weather starts to warm up for you and things change for the better. You have had your share of misfortune lately!

Poor Mabel. I hope she gets better quickly. My sister had 2 dogs, one you could put her pill on the top of her food dish and she ate it like it was a piece of food. The other, not so much. I think he was in agreement with Mabel about being morally and ethically opposed to taking pills. You had to try to hide it in different things and hope it worked. If you added it to his food, he would eat around it. Rolling it into thin sliced lunch meat tended to work as did sticking it into a piece of cheese. Both of those tended to go down with little to no chewing which is what you needed. Good Luck!

I am so so sorry about Mabel! When our furbabies get sick it is the pits. They can't talk and let us know how they are or what's wrong. I am confident that you will be able to get those pills inside her!! I hope she gets better soon. Pam

So sorry about Mabel. We too have a lab (Maggie) with a pill aversion, so our old standby is spam. Easy to cube and hide a pill - only problem is one of the two legged residents here (and there are only 2 of us) develops a real craving for spam, so a course of medication takes several cans of spam before we are finished!

With many years and many dogs, several vets, several rescued groups, we all pretty much agree that rather just two successful dose successes, the dog realizes something is certainly up! We have used many different approaches. I think we got it. We are liberal with treats every day without pills. That way, they just think the crazy human is just giving the bounty of living with a generous heart and a jar full of treats.
As far as the treat thing goes, we know they will catch us. We vary the treat hiding the pill. Most of the work is simply thing of human versus canine smarts. If things get rejected more than twice, time to change the pill hiding stuff! Here is the best for fooling Fido. You want it to stick to the pill, but not have the stiffness of the pill/tablet that be easily found no matter how you hide it!
Cream cheese, the softened type; hot dogs hot dog hot diggety dog; leftover meat of most kinds...whether it involves their favorite....needs not to be excellent...the stinkier the better; soft gooey cheeses; we have the terrible pill rules such as there is not accounting for taste; just keep trying. Ask at pet shops if they carry an item called a "pill pocket". If the dog sees it the dog will do every move you got, spitting out the pill and the pill pocket. I always tell new dogs seldom home. They expect to be rewarded for silly reasons. If DH returns home with several paper bags, or any bags, they get to sniff all the stuff and then get a treat for "helping" with the groceries coming into THEIR groceries. We humans we get anything.

So far so good! The peanut butter sandwich has worked 3 times. (Actually a quarter of a sandwich)I put a little jelly on it this morning, so she thought it was different. The funny part is she refuses to take it from me, but if I put in her dish she eats it right up.

I hope Mabel is better and glad to hear you're getting the pills in. We lost our oldest dog in Sept due to heart disease. He had a combination of 6 scripts that I gave to him in 3 doses daily over the last 4 yrs. It was easiest to just put them in the back of his mouth and then quickly give him something to eat. The one winner to hide them in though was Arby's roast beef. He knew the pills were there, but he just didn't care. haha If he did manage to spit any out, it was always the tiny Lasix. Go figure. Liz
