would this be appropriate for a beginner?

I don't think so. Pick something smaller and less floss -- see my response to the question with the Eiffel Tower a few minutes ago.

The pattern itself is not hard, but if you have not stitched on black fabric before that might give you a few problems.

Sewing on black would not give you a few problems. It would give you one ENORMOUS, GIGANTIC, HUMONGOUS problem. no kidding!

I so agree with Nancye and syagel. I tried it once and it is not for me. Of course that does not mean that you wouldn't enjoy it. Perhaps you are still young with perfect eyesight and lots of patience.

Might work if she picked a lighter fabric and stitched the black parts of the pattern.....

No, aI think this is good for several reasons. It's small. It will fit a stock frame. It's color blocked, with only a few colors, so no constant needle changing. Black is not hard, especially with 14 ct Aida. Put a white pillow case on your lap. Put a lamp on the floor. Face a window with light shining on the back of your fabric. All these make the holes look like big polka-dots.

It's a cute pattern, with Kokopellies.
