You stitch over the stamped area with the indicated color. Kind of like a color by number sort of thing?

The pattern description states that to add depth, part of the forest background is stamped. That doesn't sound like it would be part of the stitching. Rather, to add to the look of the stitched portion. That's my interpretation and a guess.
