seed beads
Working on this project now and rather than do the French knots I would like to use seed beads. There is lots of berries and snow in the picture Is there a difference in the quality of beads, There is lots of red and I was wondering would they fade over time if I just used regular or should I use better quality such as Mill Hill. Thanks Karen

Hi jk - I always use the Mill Hill beads on my projects. They are a very good quality bead and if you are going to put all this time and effort into your project you don't want to ruin it with inferior products. I have never had a problem with Mill Hill beads and I put beads on many many of my projects as they add dimension and life. I think the red beads for berries will be perfect. Keep us posted on what you decide.

I agree I would be afraid of the red ones fading over time What size would you suggest I use I see that there are a couple of sizes. I would like to put gold beads on the pointsettias as well thanks

Hi jk - I think I would use the regular seed beads that are listed on this site. If you go under the search box at the left to the beads category they will be in the upper left corner under the mill hill beads. I think the petite beads would be so small they would be lost in your picture and the pebble beads look like they would be too big and be overwhelming. Remember - this is just my opinion. I mostly use the regular sized ones on my projects. I hope this makes sense and helps. Keep us posted on how things are working out - I really like the design of the project you are working on.

I always use Mill Hill beads, as they are glass beads, not plastic.
The size you use, would depend on the count size of your fabric. If you are using 14, or 16 count, or the equivalent, use the regular size. Anything smaller, use the petite beads.

Thanks for the info. I will order the beads on Mon. Because I am in Canada I guess I will have to order another pattern or kit to make the order worthwhile and add to the stash any excuse Ha Ha Ha This pattern is quite interesting as it uses different number of threads some are 2 and others are 5. Also a lot of half stitches and the white background is not stitched With the addition of the beads it will give it more dimension Should be nice when done. Thanks again

I use Mill Hill Beads. I agree with cl and nita. This is a lot of work and you want good quality products. If at all possible, use the regular size. Seed beads are somewhat difficult to work with. You would have to use a beading needle. I used them once on a very small project - I stitched over one on a small count. Long time ago! :)
Before I came to love doing French knots, I also used beads, it's a good alternative.
Someone posted that there are approx 550 beads to a container. I always buy extra because many have to be thrown out, the holes are too small for the needle to pass through or when I have an accident and spill half the beads onto the carpet. I've spent up to 30 minutes sitting on the floor and digging the beads out when I ran low before the shipment arrived. Tedious and annoying.
If you have to do a lot of beading then I would recommend that you order a Tacky Bob from Amazon. It's a small container that has a sticky surface onto which you can dump your bead and never worry about spills again.
