needles
I have questions about needle sizing. What is the difference between packages with sizes such as 5, 7, 9, etc., and those with sizes such as 24, 26, etc.? Also, are these two different types of sizing interchangeable and if so, how is that done? Also, is there a way to determine what size a needle is once it is removed from its identifying packaging? TIA!

An extremely simplistic explanation is that the 22 24, 26, 28 with blunt tips are tapestry needles...with sharp tips are chenille needles...all those other sizes are for everything else...sewing, embroidery, quilting, etc. I keep my different sized needles labeled and separate for quick ID...but experience with needles will let you know the difference by feel, size of the eye, length of the shaft. More experienced folk can give you a much more detailed, more intelligent answer. Before I began cross stitch, I thought a needle was a needle was a needle. :)
