I have my floss on the plastic bobbins and store them in plastic boxes with dividers (like the boxes used for jewelry crafting). I write the DMC floss number on two opposite ends of the bobbin with permanent marker (but occasionally after a long while, you need to reprint the numbers because the numbers can fade). My floss is put in numerical order (takes about 5-6 large plastic containers to hold all the DMC floss. I label the plastic containers on their top lid to show which box carries what DMC floss colors, ie. 157-498.
Do the same thing for my specialty floss ie. Weeks, Sampler, Crescent, EXCEPT I cut the labels with the floss names, ie. blueberry, moss green and use heavy duty clear packaging tape tp tape the floss name (and number if available) onto one end of the plastic bobbin and put them in order alphabetically by their color names ie. Boysenberry, Seaweed, Weathered Barn. Label the plastic container lids by specialty floss manufacturers' name ie. Weeks, Sampler. Also, for the speciality floss containers, I keep the names in alphabetical order of the floss the box has by printing the names on a long refrigerator notepad, folding it in half and leaving it in the box, so all I have to do is look at the paper and see if I have the name of that floss, rather than hunting through the plastic bobbins looking at the names.
