Ugh something I am not understanding
I am doing a cross stitch pattern and something is wrong. Attached is the instructions but the "map" of the pattern is 70 8 1/2 by 11 pages. So when I found the center of the 70 pages I started but one page is about 5 by 3 inches. There is just not enough room on the 15 by 18 for this to work. Not sure what I am not getting but the math just isn't working. Any thoughts?

Julie, It would help us if you tell us what the name of the design is and who is producing it!! This is a little bit like "flying blind"! We'll see if we can figure it out....

I'm not understanding what you mean by having enough room on the 15 x 18. It might be helpful for you to "grid" your fabric. You would have 10 x 10 squares that correspond to the squares on your pattern. If you start in the middle you would work down and out making sure your squares match the grid on the pattern. Then turn the pattern and fabric upside down and work towards the top. I kow that this sounds complicated. There are some YouTube videos that might help you understand.

Julie, like Jerseycrafter suggested. Give us the name of the pattern AND the stitch count width and height. Also, give us the width and height of your fabric AND your fabric count ie. 14 count? 16 count? It can all be worked out successfully, we just need the extra information to assist. :)

Well its from Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/538758427/buy-2-get-1-free-christmas-wreath-339?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=christmas%20wreath%20cross%20stitch&ref=sr_gallery-1-33

In terms of the math part one page has 5 " by three and it goes a total of 7 pages so that is 35 inches one way. Not sure how I can measure it down as the fabric square count is dictated by the design.

Ok I think its 440 by 440 pattern and the fabric is 14 Aida 15 by 18 or 38.1 cm by 45.7cm . Is that what you need. I wasn't provided much but the instructions are attached at the first and the pattern is attached here.

Ok, stitch count is 440 x 440. Now what count aida cloth you using? And how many extra inches of fabric did you figure with mounting and framing?
lmurdoch Just finished stitching a beautiful wreath. Hopefully she’ll see this and jump in with her knowledge.
I always start in the beginning with fabric stitch count and the pattern’s stitch count and do the math.
I’m starting to think that you might need to find the center of the pattern and count your stitches straight up till you get to the very top row of the wreath, then stitch that top row going to the left from center and then stitch fron center going to the right.
I agree Nancye G., Gridding would probably resolve this easier, but I don’t know if she knows how to grid, so I’m suggesting my ‘old fart’ way of doing it before ‘gridding’ came on the scene.

I might put it on a pillow. I just added inches to the instructions for 14 Aida cloth. Nothing real formal to it. Also it doesn't YET met sense to me how something that appears bigger than the size of cloth i bought. Maybe I bought the wrong size of cloth.

Ok, here is what I got from the 440 x 440 pattern stitch count and using a 14-count aida cloth stitching over ONE square AND adding 3-inches to EACH side of fabric for mounting and framing:
Stitched area: 31 1/2 inches wide x 31 1/2 inches high
Fabric needed: 37-inches Wide x 37-inches High
That’s a pretty big pillow....

Oh, and don’t be discouraged, when you start laying out a multi-page pattern ( I lay my patterns out on the bed, but prefer laying them out in order ON THE FLOOR so I can stand and look down on it ( bird’s-eye view) the pattern does look much bigger than the completed pattern. I put an example picture of a WIP as an example:
The actual WIDTH of this is 14”, BUT my paper pattern is
FIVE and a HALF pages of 8 1/2” Wide (x 11” high!!) to stitch that 14-inch. So don’t be thrown by the largeness of the PAPER pattern versus the actual size of the finished cross stitch.

So I got read the instructions wrong and needed a much bigger cloth. Thanks. Feeling stupid.

Don’t feel that way. You are not stupid! And no one on this chat thinks you are. It can be very confusing. I added to my last chat to you and showed you an example of how a PAPER pattern can make you think that your actual finished project will be the same size. It took me FIVE
8 1/2” Wide pattern PAGES to do a 14-inch Wide pattern
(See picture on previous chat) on 28-count ‘over 1’ fabric.
