When you finish stitching a piece........
That's a gift for someone, do you stitch your name & date on it? I'm almost done with one for one of my daughters, and was thinking of putting something like "stitched by Mom" on it. Should I?
What do you do?

That's a personally preference. You can also buy small personalized labels pre-made to attach to your projects. See link:

I thought about doing that at the lower right corner in small letters with a date. What do you think Syagel and Texas Stticher?

I have some small labels with my name on them that I attach to the back frame of a piece I make as a gift. Sometimes I have also stitched my initials in the corner, but to be honest most of the time I never think about it until after I have it framed since it is not my original design. I know this isn't much help.

Ipnbarnes, I'm in total agreement with the other two ladies. I have "initialed" my work - my daughter thinks that I should. But I feel that it's somewhat ingenuous because I really just copied the pattern - someone else designed it. When I do, I usually try to make it as unobtrusive as possible and try to work it in on the bottom somewhere. I only go over one thread and use one strand of floss. I place my initials and the year. Only for family stuff though. I pretty much always write my name on the back and the year that I stitched it in the event that the kids pass it on and that someonw down the line is interested in the stuff. I often wonder if it's worth putting so much effort and money into it but then I tell myself that I get so much enjoyment from doing the work. We all need a hobby.

If you put " Stitched by ...", I think it would be fine. Normally your name would be on a sampler, wedding or anniversary design. These patterns come with alphabets & number charts. I normally include information on the back of framed pieces, like the other stitchers have mentioned.

When I "sign my work" it is in the most unobtrusive way possible. I only do it for family, i.e., Christmas stockings, birth samplers, etc and only when I think about it. I try to work it in as close to a stitched area on the buttom as possible and only go over one square on linen. I use 1 strand of floss and back stitch stitching only. I'm with jlhewes though, placing something on the back of the frame is far better.

I often forget to "sign" my pictures but when I remember, I usually just use my three initials in backstitch - very small and stitched close to the bottom in a place where it can hardly be found. I like the idea of ordering some to put on the back. You can also add other things on the back. I stitched Ukranian Easter Eggs and have them framed in an oval around a brightly colored Celtic Cross. The chart told what each of the patterns on the eggs meant so I copied that and put it in an envelope attached to the back of the picture. One of my daughters has asked for the picture so when the time comes, she'll be surprised to learn all about Ukranian Easter Eggs!

Absolutely ..... you should do it ..... "Stitched by Mom With Love" and date your piece! In the past when I have stitched something special for my mom and/or each of my 3 sisters ..... I would have the piece framed and write a special message on the paper covering the back of the frame.

I lost both of my parents in an instant ..... no warning ..... no chance to say goodbye. My dad died way to young at the age of 51 while I was in college. My mom died in 1996 at the age of 64 while I was pregnant with my youngest son.

From my dad - I have letters, postcards, amazing poems ..... and ..... a very special collection of my father's writings telling stories about his childhood. My mom was quite the seamstress, and when she started making dress clothes for the grandchildren she had special labels made up to stitch into her "Master Pieces" ..... HANDMADE WITH LOVE, MEEMEE. I cherish them all, and I miss my parents terribly!

My boys never met their grandfather. My youngest son did not have the chance to meet either of my parents. I know without a doubt they are watching over us! :-)

Truthfully, I put my initials/SEM-C and the complete year for gifts other than family. For family, I put SUE/2014 etc. if the gift is for someone special, I usually end up putting my name. It is a matter of personal preference. On the back of speciality patterns/projects, I usually put the name of the pattern, designer, and complete (my name) and date.
