floss colors
I just bought "Afternoon Nap" at my local Wal-Mart. I have done several cross stitch kits over the last 20 years or so. I am not a master, by any means, but am usually pretty good at separating the floss into the required colors. I use a method of separating the colors into matching swaths, and seeing how many yards I have of each to help sort the colors. I have done this, but still don't seem to have the right number of colors to fit the color guide. Most seem correct, but for example, the yellow chart says that I should have 4 yards, but there is 5. The chart says that I should have 2 yards of light tan, 2 yards of light beige, and 3 yards of light rose beige. What I have left to make up this configuration is 6 yards of a sort of dark beige color. The only color on the chart that I am supposed to have 6 of is yellow-green. The only colors that I am supposed to have 5 yards of are charcoal and taupe. These colors that I lack are not easily mixed up into the other colors (for example being only a shade different). What might be the best way to solve this issue?

The first thing I'd do iss get into direct sunlight and look again at the floss (unless you have a lamp that provides sunlight). If you still can't separate the skein colors, get someone else to look, in daylight, too. I use my log-suffering spouse, who knows to go along with doing this. Then, when those two things fail, which hardly ever occur with me (and yes, you're doung it "right", or at least the way most do it), I either contact the company that made the kit, or I get their 800 number and call. Number for customer service. Walmart might replace the kit if you take it back and tell them it is faulty and let them deal with it. If you have the receipt, you might get your money back. One reason I buy online...I can return stuff or ask for help!

I rarely buy cross stitch kits just for the problem you are having. If I buy a kit of something I really like it is almost always from Dimensions Inc. Their kits come with the floss presorted already so there is no problem guessing which color is which. I have always had more than enough floss with their kits also. I do take the floss and cut it in shorter lengths and put it on my own floss bobbins, but I don't have any trouble determining which color is which.

I would contact the company that put out the kit and tell them your problem.

Honey throw all the thread away! Go buy yourself some DMC (conversion chart online) and don't go crazy trying to sort it out. I did that and got so frustrated and mad that I threw away the thread, punched a pillow and swore - a lot. Then took a deep breath and looked in my thread box where I store al my DMC thread and picked out all the thread needed for my pattern with the exception of 2 colors.

Now THAT WAS EASY!
