change in fabric count
This product comes in a complete kit that includes 18 count ivory cotton Aida. I would like to use Christmas Red Aida Count 14. How much cross stitch fabric I will need and what will be the size of the finished product?

The pattern probably states somewhere what the "stitch count size" is. 18 count equals 18 stitches per inch, therefore a 14" count equals 14 stitches per inch. Your finished product will be bigger than what the kit says the finished size will be. You'll need to know what the total stitch counts are to know how big the red piece will need to be. Remember to add enough margin for finishing. Have fun!!

Hi Sierra.....if you work backwards and divide the finished size of 16" long by 18, that tells you that the stitch count for the length of the stocking is 244. If you are working on 14 count Aida then, the length of the stocking will be about 21". I couldn't find the size of the width. If you are buying Christmas Red by the foot.. the 43" width is enough for the length of your stocking. I'm not sure if 12 " is enough for the width and leaving an adequate allowance for sewing. I guess I would buy 2 feet, unless someone can tell you the finished width and you can fit it into the 12".

Sierra if I was going to do this Christmas stocking and was going to change the fabric size from 18 ct. to 14ct Aida I would not order this kit. I would just get a pattern of a Christmas stocking I liked. To spend $30.00 for a kit and then not use the fabric means you would not have enough felt for the back or floss to do the stitching and would have to buy more of them on top of the cost of the kit. Basically you would be paying $30.00 for just a pattern and that is too much in my book. There are many Christmas stockings that come as just patterns and then you can do what you want to do. They are not anywhere near that expensive. Just my suggestion.

syagel is absolutely correct.

I read the description and it says "wool yarn". I have a very, very minor experience with wool yarn and can't say that I would want to stitch with it ever again. I'm a hardcore DMC fan. I am not, however, a fan of kits for reasons that have been discussed in many previous chats.

Wool yarn is odd. Maybe it's just the little tassel. It also mentions cotton & metallic thread.

I agree with the others. It's a cute stocking, but unless you have a strong reason to use red 14-ct, I would stick with the supplied Aida cloth.

Looked at the enlarged picture again, I think every square is stitched, so the fabric hardly shows.

Texas Stitcher I agree with you. I missed the part about wool yarn. I don't like using it either. Like you I am a devoted DMC floss user. I just thought if she was going to change so much of the other items it was going to be a waste of money.

Thank you so much for all comments. The opinions you provided helped me make an informed decision whether I will buy this kit or not. I also use DMC and I don't know the feel and texture of other thread/floss that will be included in the kit.
