thinking about substitutions
I am thinking about working this [at least partly] in the Caron silk threads. Could someone please let me know....A: How many yards per skein....and B: Is this 100% silk......and don't laugh people, you would not BELIEVE how many times I've run into Rayon being sold as silk.

I went to the Caron website and found out this information. The only one they make that is 100% silk is the Waterlillies 12 ply silk collection. It comes in 6 - 1 yard lengths for $5.99 each skein. It also comes in 40 yd. and 100 yd. skeins but have no price on these skeins, but I am sure they are quite expensive. Hope this helps.

This is one of the most beautiful patterns I have ever seen. I put it on my wish list, but I already have a lot of projects ahead of it.

Hi ,...I agree the pattern is very detailed and appealing. But it takes 78 DMC colours....you may want to rethink the silk at $6 + a skein. The Caron Waterlilies would also not give you the same shading...there are only a few base solid colours....and the rest are variegated. It would be hard to match to the DMC colours IMO.

Stick to the known brands when buying your silks. Anything you buy off the internet is suspect....unless you already know and trust the seller.

Caron makes Soie Crystale. It's 100% silk from Italy. 12 ply, 6 yds. I only know this because I had to buy one for Freda's Satin Variations..

A lot of other companies make silks (Kreinik, Thread Gatherer, Needlepoint Silk, etc.), but I've never seen conversion charts and I agree it would be difficult to find all the colors. Lay your cotton floss carefully and it will look like silk.

Prettiest Tut I've seen!

Thank you everyone.
To reassure all of you, I'm not planning a straight across substitution, but rather a bit of here-and-there embellishment.
Trust me, I do NOT have the kind of budget required for doing the whole thing in silk!
As for brands, as I mentioned before, I am looking at the silk thread by Caron [offered here on this very on-site, what a coinky-dink!] .... I just forgot to throw that "Waterlilies" brand in there
As for matching colors, I plan to do that with the floss list [and my boxes of DMC] in hand. I'm looking for a nice, subtle shimmery highlight effect......Sigh....subtle and me in the same paragraph....friends and family will laugh themselves sick
