BUYING KITS
It sounds to me that most of us dislike purchasing kits for one reason or another. I don't understand why the publishers don't give an option of pattern only or kit. There are several patterns that I would jump at the chance to buy pattern only.

Guess they don't think they'll make a profit. Lanarte pulled in a lot of their patterns to sell as kits. The one I bought was awful -- crooked fabric, crooked background printing.

They should at least commit to quality control & ample / excessive floss. Floss is their cheapest item, so I really do not get that part.

I won't purchase another kit, I don't care how much I like the pattern. I just ordered Lugana for Maggie the Messmaker because I don't like Aida and don't want to do it on 18ct, especially since 1/4 stitches are involved. Running out of floss is also a concern.
Kits must be money makers or they wouldn't sell them and I'm sure that the quality of fabric and floss isn't the best. I saw the Maggie kit on Amazon by chance for not quite $27.00.
It's patterns all the way for me from now on.

As I said on another post, "Lots of good fish in the sea". With millions of patterns, I don't think you need to settle. If you're hooked on kits, try "Kitting Up". Same results, better quality. A little extra floss, but if the designer has used a color for 2+ stitches in the pattern, use one of the other colors!

Nancy G, I read the Sony movie The Interview got pirated about 200,000 times already. Makes me wonder if there are hackers we don't know about stealing Dimensions patterns. Maybe we could ask Putin to contact Riolis about it?

Nah, probably not. We don't have enough money! I think the bad elf is on my shoulder today.

Bad experience with kit when I first started counted cross stitching....too little fabric and too little threads for the project. Won't do THAT again...

I remember way back when that this was rarely ever an issue---you did NOT come up short on fabric or thread like I have been seeing so frequently today. I think this is why the big companies like selling kits since they are knowingly buying cheap fabric and know they are shorting the thread, then marking it way up and walking away with monster profits. If it wasn't profitable, kits would not be around. I think the only reason the kits sell is because 95% of the time the patterns are exclusive to the kits they are sold with. If you could buy the pattern buy itself, no one would buy kits anymore because of the materials alway being short. If the patterns were sold with or without a kit option, the companies would then have to either tow the line and upgrade the quality and quantity in the kits, or they would disappear entirely.

Just a thought. I think that if they sold the patterns seperately, I would buy more of them. They would end up in my "someday" file along with my "someday" fabric and my "someday" floss. I would probably end up with an even bigger stash than I presently have. Maybe they are doing me a favor!

Excellent point, Nancy.

I have to agree with all of you. I did buy Maggie The Messmaker many years ago and I had plenty of floss and had a very good piece of 18ct. fabric with it. Now a days the last time I bought a kit the quality just wasn't as good. When I buy projects now I just buy the patterns and use my stashes of floss and fabric, because I only have good quality supplies. I have more patterns now than I will ever do and I still keep buying new ones. Guess it is a sickness. LOL
