Surprise for me!
Tonight I was given a book, JUST GRANDMA AND ME. My son and daughter in-law are having a baby! I know many of you are experienced and this is a dream come true for me. I am not allowed to say anything until they tell my mom on Saturday. This will be Mom's first great-grandchild. Thanks to the anonymity of this site, I can share my enthusiasm and ask the question.... what do I make first!!! : ) What is your favorite gift, what are the pitfalls I should avoid? I will be a grandma in Aug. Wooo Hoooo!

Congratulations xstitcher522. Such exciting news for you. Did you check out some of the baby stitchable items here at ECS. I just love the stitchable stuffed animals, so cute. Be careful about bibs. Some tie on, some pull over (I think these may be harder to use unless they have snaps to widen it), some with velcro attachment or hook and loop closure. Best wishes to you and I'm sure everyone here will be chiming in with stitching ideas for you.

Congratulations! August is also going to be a banner month for me, too! My first great grandbaby! I also need ideas....this girl is just not the hand-made, sampler type. Her father suggested I get Chanel labels for anything I make! LOL! Told him that was not a popular stylist for today's youth....she is so much "younger" than I EVER was! Probably will have to threaten with child abuse charges to keep her away from baby tattoo artists! I truly hope that's a joke....

One of the best things I have seen is an item that keeps the pacifier from falling on the floor after dropping from the baby's mouth. I don't know what they are called though. It used to be a clip attached to the front of the baby's clothes, but I think now it is made better.
Another thing which I have found after having 3 grandchildren: Don't say the baby looks like some one on your side of the family. The mother always thinks the baby looks like her side.

Even though I am an old stitcher, I have noticed lots of baby designs for samplers and alphabets that use the brighter,.less traditional more "with it" bright cheerful colors. You can always ask what color scheme they plan for the nursery. My poor neighbor just knitted a lovely soft blanket in pink and purple and her daughter was rather adamant on the phone that she only wants gray and purple in the nursery. She is pretty upset.
Anyhow, I agree that bins should tie or have snaps! They are quick stitches as are towels with the corner "hood" all set to stitch.

LOL maubennett!
Grandma xstitcher, Maybe the best advice is to keep those hormone levels of the new mom in mind! She will not be in her right mind for years! LOL! Be quick to understand and forgive! :)

CONGRATULATIONS !!!
I personally like birth samplers.. have made them for my grands, greats, & my sister's grands 11 of these), plus to many to count for friends kids & grands.. they make great shower gifts.

I usually start about end of first trimester, (everything of course except name, date, etc.) so it is ready for baby shower.. than you are able to pick out frame & matt; take it to the shower & than take it back w/ you to complete after baby's birth..

if you know baby's sex & mom's decorating theme you can even make it more personal.. or just pick a generic type theme.. there are many to choose from & they are all beautiful..

of course, you can always make some bibs, comforts etc. as suggested by others..

Get busy Gram..
Happy stitching..

It is tough stitching for gifts. One of my relatives was adamant the baby's name would be Alice. I bought a beautiful pattern for Alice in Wonderland. Fortunately, (?!?!) I developed a problem with my eyes and could not stitch for several months. The little girl's name is Katy (Kathryn). That was 25 years ago and I am back to stitching, now with a problem with my wrist.!!

Congratulations! I would go with the birth sampler. Bibs are a throw away item and people hardly use them any more. Our granddaughter almost injured herself trying to pull one off. They are dangerous. I stitched samplers and knitted and/or crocheted baby blankets in neutral colors. I usually make the blankets a little larger so they can use them when they get older as well. Steiff makes beautiful stuffed animals and their Teddy bears are classics. The best gift is a college savings fund these days, even if it's only $20 per month. It can be turned over into a CD or mutual fund eventually.
My daughter is an August baby and she has been a joy to us her entire life.

When my grandsons were born I made each of them a crocheted afghan. I would go with either a birth sampler like Texas Stitcher mentioned or a cross stitched baby afghan. I agree baby bibs just aren't used that much and get thrown away. Hopefully your Grandbaby will be close enough to see him or her often. With my son in the Marine Corps I only get to see my Grandsons about once every 2 years. Thank God for Skype!!! Congratulations Grandma!!
