hands
If someone is right handed like myself, which is the best to be stitching right to left or left to right?

I am right handed;
always start in center of pattern - stitch from left to right & than back (right to left) to complete stitches..
next row the same way
to bottom following pattern..
than turn the patter around and continue the same way.. left to right & back again..
happy stitching..

a shop owner gave me this tip years ago.. I would start in center, left to right, middle to bottom.
when that was complete, I couldn't figure what next?
she told me simply turn the pattern around, making bottom the top & top the bottom..

didn't understand it until I started doing it.. sometime you spend more time "upside down" than right side up..
no counting back and over..
good luck,
happy stitching..

As a leftie, I usually start in the middle and work my way left to right and down. I don't turn my work.
When I was a child my mom had to look all over the place to find me scissors because I couldn't cut paper with the scissors that were being used in kindergarten class. I'm grateful that needles are neither left or right handed.

Since I am a leftie I usually start in the center and stitch left to right especially if I am doing an entire row of the same color. Sometimes I work middle to top and sometimes middle to bottom. Just depends on the mood I am in. If I start at the top left corner I work left to right and top to bottom. Basically it comes down to each individual pattern and how I decide to do it.

I, too, am left handed but use my right hand for cutting. However, my mom had to search for a lefty scissors for my younger brother too, but that was way back in the 1950's. As for my direction for cross stitching, I go every which way, not just left to right, depending on the pattern. But I never turn my marterial. I have to keep the picture up right, not upside down. Because I grid my big projects with Easy-Count Guidleline, I will often start in an easy corner, or the middle if the pattern is not so complicated with colors. On small projects, which I don't gird, I will usually start in a corner. Of course, I always purchase more than enough Aida for a project, so I have big margins all around to play it safe. Again, it is what ever is comfortable for you individually. Most important is just the joy of stitching. And as an added note, I was finding the time to grid a necessary chore. But then this last time, I started gridding before I finished the project I was currently on, taking a break from it, and doing it while watching TV. So when I did finish the project, I was all ready to go with the next. I am slowly starting my gridding for the next project, which I won't get to for months yet. Now it is not so much of a chore. Happy stitching!

Wow! I'm a lefty too. I don't stitch in rows unless the pattern demands it. I like top or bottom starting points. If I measure down & in the 3", that's centered enough! If the bottom is the best start, I'll stitch the whole thing upside down. Hey, looks the same when it's finished. Whatever turns you on.

I'm with you, jl. It all depends on the pattern. I determine the easiest starting point and go from there. I'm not too keen on starting in the center - don't know why.
DH is a leftie and he uses that as an excuse why there are so many things that he cannot do! LOL

Texas Stitcher I was always told we lefties were exceptionally intelligent because we have to compensate for a right-handed world. No one ever believed me though especially my DH. LOL

I am a "rightie" I stitch left to right. Full rows all the way across. Then I start then next row righr to left. I have never had to turn anything.
