I have done some smaller work and complicated samplers and have read a few instructions about stitches etc, but haven!t heard about gridding. What is it?

This is duplicating the thicker lines on your graph onto your fabric. Used to be done by basting floss or sewing thread on for every 10 stitches on the pattern. Now there's a red plastic fishing line for sale, which cannot be pierced by the needle.
Some stitches feel gridding helps them stay on pattern.
