Cross stitching wedding hankies
I need advice! I'm an avid cross stitcher, but have only tried once to cross stitch without Aida cloth. I've been asked by my future daughter-in-law to cross stitch a nine-line poem on hankies that she can give to her flower girls and ring bearers. She wants it in one corner of the hankie, on the diagonal, so to speak. I thought of using waste cloth, so it could be beautifully uniform, but can't find waste cloth in any size smaller than 14-count. I considered trying stitching the poem on 22- count Aida and then tracing it with a light board and water soluble pen onto the hankie. I'm afraid the block-ish lettering she wants won't end up looking even. Any else have more success with a better method? Please help! Thanks a million, GrammaNan

Perhaps you could embroider the poem? The backstitch (same as outline stitch) translates beautifully into cursive writing. You could write it out in the WORD program, trace it on the hanky, and then backstitch it in the colors you wish. Good luck! Have a great time at the wedding.

Talk her out of it. Hankie material is too thin and you'd have to do really, really clean work because the back shows.

Do you like to crochet. Several years ago I crocheted lace around handkerchief. It looks beautiful. I bought mine in Germany but have seen them at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. The hankies are generally white and there are many colors of thread to choose from. They look quite elegant and can be used when carrying a small evening purse. Just more useless stuff cluttering up the house but fun to do and to look at.

Good luck.

Is this really appropriate for flower girls and ring bears. I mean they are little kids. Are they going to appreciate such a gift?

On the other hand, you could thank the DILto-be for thinking of you. Their are still nice lawn hankies to be had & jewelry is more appreciated.

Use beautiful hand stitched hankies for tears and shmutz??? That is why they invented Kleenex (LOL)

Nancye, I cannot look into the deep dark recesses of the minds - just trying to be helpful. LOL Brides are probably emotional and hormonal. Tears wouldn't be so bad but shmutz!!! You have a point. I can't imagine that grandma would want to stitch these things at least 6 times. What are the men and ring bearer getting? Go with pearl earring posts. Freshwater pearls are so affordable.

But if you are dead set on hankies, then I would suggest batiste. I saw and/or bought some in Salt Lake many years ago. They were huge and thick, not so suitable for a wedding. That's all I have to say on that subject. I try to avoid weddings and funerals like the plague.

We had the time of our lives today - Olivia's pre-K class had graduation pictures taken today. Hilarious! To keep them busy the teacher said let's sing our graduation song, one little girl busted out with "Happy Mother's Day", the teacher was looking for "God Bless America". Of all the graduation ceremonies that I have and will, hopefully" attend yet this one will be the most memorable. I have now a better understanding of why someone would want to choose this career path.
