Basic counted cross stitch is not difficult to learn. However, it is difficult to explain on this chat. There are tons of on-line sites with or without video instructions. Just google "cross stitch instructions" There are also written step by step instructions on line. Try your library. Some of the simple kits come with instructions. If you buy a kit do not buy one from Dimensions. Lots of the chatters here have had problems with them.

I think you will like cross stitch. It can be an inexpensive hobby -- unless you get really hooked and start buying tons of patterns and supplies for future projects.

Once you go thru the basic instructions be sure to come here with specific questions. You will get lots of help. Lots of suggestions.

Some stitch left to right others right to left.
Some stitch in ten inch squares; others all the way across the pattern
Some grid their fabric; others don't
some start in the middle; others in one of the quarters
some like linen; some like aida
So on and so forth

It is not hard to learn. You can practice and develop the techniques that work best for you.

This is a pretty friendly group. Some of the chatter may sound rude and sarcastic at times. That is a big problem with using email.

However you proceed -- I promise not to call the Cross Stitch Police on you. (That is an running running gag)

WELCOME ABOARD

I think one of the best ways to learn is to buy one of the beginner kits on this website. They will have good instructions in them for you. If you have questions come back to this chat room and we will be glad to help you. I taught myself to cross stitch over 25 years ago and am still loving it.

U can go to youtube.com It is easy as 1-2-3- If you buy a small kit or U download a chart from Pinterest. It is just doing so many of an xxxxxxxxxxx on the material with different colors. Good luck

There's a short video on this site that will also help you!

Most of the beginner kits have drawings to show you how to do counted cross stitch. If you're new at it, I would suggest starting with something small like a bookmark so you don't get overwhelmed. It's hard to put into words, but once you see the drawings (and look online to see it actually being done) it's easy. But like I said, start small.

This is not something that would be easy to explain on this site. You should google "beginning cross stitch". Lots of stuff wiil come up. Go to your local Joanns and see if you can get 11-count aida cloth or a beginners kit, you know, the ones that usually have a picture of an animal, the cloth, the needle and floss and small hoop. Stay away from Dimension Kits. They usually short you on the floss and is the reason why a lot.of us on this chat don't buy kits. I wish you good luck. Cross-stitching is addicting and this group is fun and have a lot of experience.

Excellent answers, all of you. I wish I had found this blog back when I started, but I went to the library when I first started.... But after finding this site and reading the blogs, I now feel like I am part of a group who has the same addiction that I have. I have learned a lot of helpful ideas from this blog. And too, I feel that this is my "local" stitching group. We just don't meet face to face. Feel free to ask the wonderful stitchers here questions. We all love stitching. And Everything Cross Stitch is great about answering your questions about the products they sell. Just email customer service.
