Do needle sizes get larger or smaller as the number goes up? For example is needle size 28 the longest or shortest needle in the cross stitch/tapestry category?

28 is the finest & thinest. You can put yarn in a size 20. Needle sizing is very confusing,

jm, I went to a website that was very helpful regarding needles and everything else! Google: Cross Stitch Helpful Hints. Scroll down and look for the Salt & Pepper.com site. If you go into that site, there are several printable pages that are very, very helpful. Everything about how to begin cross stitching to the fabric to what size needles are recommended for which fabric. I think you will like the site.
