long needles with the eye in the middle...
I don't know the name of these, but I know you guys know what I mean. My mom asked me to see if any of you have used them, and I know I read before that some of you have. She works without a hoop, and has had trouble with thread knotting; but she's not doing it the way I've seen it demonstrated. She's putting the needle in from the front, and then taking her hand to the back to pull it down, then putting it in from the back, and bringing her hand to the front again to pull it out forward. I told her I didn't see much difference in doing it that way and using the good old method we all learned on. I have a Bird, but she doesn't want to use a hoop...I told her that if she would use a hoop and put the hoop into the Bird, she could work with one hand staying at the back and then she'd know better if the thread is knotting on the underside. But she's stubborn, and asked me to check with you all. So, what do you think? Thanks for the help! Valerie

Hi there

If your mom is comfortable in doing something let her to it. To each his own. To do it this way or the other it will be done. That is my opinion.

Tried those needles once. Couldn't figure out how to handle the floss. I gave up on them since I'm ambidextrous & regular needles are just as fast for a two-handed stitcher.

Moms can get cranky & stubborn as they age. Only got mine to admit it once. Red Hat Club time! I'm in it now, & can be as unreasonable as I please!

Thanks, ladies, for your responses.

Miss cross - it's not that my mom is uncomfortable. She just likes to try out methods that are new to her (not like me; I'm happy with "the way we've always done it") but she can't figure out how it could be a time-saving measure for anybody. It's like she thinks that someone else knows something she doesn't, and she wants to be in on the secret! Of course, I wouldn't make her do anything other than what she wants to do, because, as the t-shirt says, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!"

jlhewes - What age are you, Red Hat?

I'm 68, but the poem has been around a long time. Some of it's nasty!

I've always been the oddball who did what she wanted, anyway, so no reason to join a Red Hat Club.

I think the poem is titled: " When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple."

My Gram had a way with her cane, I've always envied. If I ever get one, I shall copy her technique in lines & at sales.

jl - You're right, I think, the poem is kind of a "rant". In my youth and young adulthood, I was self-conscious and only wore clothes I thought would make me look attractive...but long before I turned 30, I realized that I didn't care what others thought, and gave myself permission to wear elastic-waist pants. Freedom!!!
