cross stitch or counted cross stitch
Is this pattern a counted cross stitch or just one stitch. I'm sort of new to cross stitch. I bought one in a store where you just stitch in one direction and then turn it upside down and stitch back. I'm confused as some say counted cross stitch and that's what I want. Is this one the x stitch? Can I use a hoop with this pattern?? Jean Duncan

Hello,

This is a counted cross stitch pattern. You make X's in the square holes of the fabric with the colored floss and you can certainly use a hoop with your fabric if you choose to. A lot of stitchers use hoops while stitching their designs :) Hope this helps! Thank you!

Jean -- This is a lovely pattern. However, if you are new to cross-stitching it might be a little frustrating. Consider doing a couple of smaller pieces with few colors and distinct shapes -- like funky flowers or a simple abstract shape. Something simple so you won't get frustrated and give up.

Well, you certainly could count yourself experienced, if you finished it, or if you didn't! :) You can usually tell how complicated a pattern is by how many colors of floss are used. While it might only use whole stitches, the shading done makes it a little more challenging. I would never discourage anyone from trying, but this one has a LOT of floss colors...50+...

BUT, if you decide to take the plunge, this is the place to get answers, help, commisseration, and shared joy! There is lots of experience and understanding among these people and you are welcome to share your experiences, attitudes, choices with them! :)

I agree with Nancye and Vcess. The picture is absolutely beautiful. But like the stitchers before me have said, you might want to try a smaller one just to get your feet wet and get a feel for stitching.

I'll definitely say, though, that once you're ready for this pattern (which can be now, if you want!!), there's absolutely NO reason for you to feel intimidated by the size/amount of colors. Yes, it's more complicated and more involved, but it's all about taking one step at a time just like you do with anything else. Like Vcess said, the Chit Chat will offer you any and all advice you need to help you along.
