ANSWERING JEWISH QUESTIONS
By no means was I offended by any questions.

I just spent a half hour trying to answer your questions. Just as I was ready to press the "post" button my screen blanked out.

GGG -- I promise answers later this evening.

Thank you for the effort Nancye. My hat question has been answered. I have not known any Jewish person to ask before and I was concerned about offending someone.

I will try again to answer questions. This time I am going to give a simple answer. If you have any questions please ask. I am not insulted. I am happy that you want to know about Jewish practices

The spelling of Chanukah/Hanukkah -- Either spelling is acceptable. The Hebrew alphabet is very different from the English alphabet. Therefore, when words are translated the spelling might be different. The spelling has nothing to do with the level of belief.

Little Hats – Commonly called “yarmulke” the “r” is silent. The word comes from a Persian dialect.I don’t know why it is spelled this way. The Hebrew word is kippah or kippa. It can be held in place using a bobby pin or hair clip. I used to put Velcro in some of my husband’s kippas when he had more hair.

Chanukah is not the Jewish Christmas. Chanukah is a very minor holiday in the Jewish religion. The concept of gift giving evolved as Jews decided to accept some Christian practices.

History -- Around 165 BCE the Syrians were in control of Jerusalem. Judah Macabee and his brothers led a revolt and regained control of the Holy Temple. There was only enough holy oil left to light the Menorah (candleholder) for one day. Miraculously the oil lasted for eight days. It just so happens that this event occurred on the 25th of Kislev which is the Jewish month around December.
