Idea For Thread Remnants
About a year ago I started a project to use up an overabundance of thread remnants. It turned into a patchwork quilt design in overlaid squares in the center, a little bit of a challenge. A friend who quilts fell absolutely in love with it and had it framed for her dining room. I think if I were to do it again I might do same size quilt squares but this was fun and challenging. It was also fascinating to see it create itself, as I worked center on outward one "patch" at a time.

That is really cool. As everyone does, I have thread remnants and plan to do some Christmas ornaments of quilt squares using them up. Did you have much thread left over?

Thank you, Judy. I do have a lot from past projects, and also because a lot of friends have given me theirs. I am almost sixty now, and many friends are older and don't stitch anymore for a variety of health reasons, so I have inherited their kits, etc. I very much look forward to seeing your ornaments when they are finished.

I guess that means that I had better dig out the threads and patterns. I too had someone give me their stash. Some of it I passed on and some I have used myself but I had a couple of big kits that I didn't really like the threads for and used DMC instead. Good thing I did because I ended up using more thread than the kit had.

Judy - or maybe just save them for a rainy day. We, like quilters all have our stash. Sometimes in going through them every so often we can rediscover everything we forgot we had! 😊

No kidding. I keep going through my stuff looking for something else and get sidetracked but I did get rid of a huge pile of magazines which I'm going to take to the Salvation Army.

While I think of it, does anyone have the 1996 issue of Just Cross Stitch. I have parts 1, 2, and 4 of the Elizabethan box. I e-mailed Just Cross Stitch a few weeks ago and they did get back to me and said they would refer it to the correct department but still haven't heard from them. I did look for back issues and didn't find it. All I want is the pattern and article for Part 3 of the box. Thanks!

I hope someone can help. I never did collect any magazines. Be gently persistent until the magazine folks help you. 😃

Bluejay, that is fantastic work and a great idea. We all have tons of floss languishing in our stash. I never thought of this. So, help me understand, you took one large piece of fabric and began stitching the blocks or are they individual pieces?

I am saving this post. I love your idea.

Thank you, Texas! 😃

I started with a blank piece of canvas and placed my first design in the center. Then, one by one I added squares around that one, making them to appear to be laid either over or under the ones next to them, choosing different color combinations each time and different patterns, trying not to put like colors or styles near each other, while making it appear random. Last came the border, and I chose colors the same way.

Next time though, I might try same size squares with different quilting patterns in each. I was stymied by how to do diamond shapes for awhile, but think I have got it figured out. HOWEVER, I have about fifteen other kits I want to do first! With this design, you just let it lead you, square by square and it will complete itself.
