Yes I have used Aida cloth for many patterns that called for linen, Laguna or other even-weave fabrics. This works especially well if most of the fabric is covered with stitching.

I just ordered a pattern that uses linen and I'm going to try it for the first time (thanks to the advice of my fellow stitchers for giving me the courage- :)) Before, I have always used Aida in lieu of linen. It still looked good!
