In every pattern that you buy there is the with and height of the design in stitches and in inches.

This Irish Blessing pattern is stitched on 40ct. Silk Gauze which is included in the pattern that you get. The pattern is stitched with Gentle Arts Floss and Weeks Dye Works floss over 2 threads. DMC floss alternate colors are given in the pattern. The finished size of the pattern is 6.6 inches x 8.2 inches. Hope this information helps you out.

You will need the stitch count. I think the fabric calculator only works when you're buying the pattern.

Once you have the pattern, you can go directly to the fabric pages. The pattern may tell you what fabric count it used & you can select that (like 14-ct Aida.) Or, you can choose another fabric with a higher count, or lower.

Divide the stitch counts by the fabric count + 3"each side for mounting cloth. See below:

Aida divides by the fabric count, evenweaves divide by 1/2 the fabric count, unless the pattern has you stitching over only 1 thread on linen or evenweave to make the design smaller. Example: 300 pattern stitches divided by 14-ct Aida = 21.4 inches. 28-ct linen also divides by 14 because you stitch over 2 fabric threads.

ECS sells some fabric by cut size & some by linear foot. You get the whole width of the bolt & have some fabric for later projects.

If you have need to use the "fabric calculator" in the future, click the little calculator icon to the left on the main design page.

Jlhewes has given you a very good description of how to use the fabric calculator. It will help you learn how to calculate your fabric needs. As you get more experience you will able to figure the fabric yourself. I have never used the fabric calculator. I have been stitching over 30 years and figure my fabric size in my head. Have fun stitching The Irish Blessing.
