amount of Floss
Hi, I am new at cross stitching. I recently bought a pattern. the pattern tells me what floss color I need but does not tell me how much of each color I should purchase. I want to make it as a 14 count. Is there a way for me to calculate how much floss I should buy of each color? Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me out.

Hi there.

Since I came to the USA that was 40 years ago. I never had seen written in a book the quantities of the floss that you need for in doing your cross stitching in a book or leaflet or a pattern. But when I was in France and UK. I had bought needlepoint that tell you what the numbers and the amount of the floss that you need and which brand that suit you.

Azat, it depends on how large your pattern is. If you are using DMC floss you will have to buy a minimun of 1 of each color, as you cannot purchase a partial. Then you can purchase additional ones if you run out. Unless you have a large pattern with a large concentration of one color in it I would think 1 of each color should get you started.

Most patterns of small or medium size use 1 skein of floss for a project. Usually if a pattern takes more than one skein of DMC floss the pattern will tell you. Any very large pattern that you do will usually have a page listing all of the DMC colors you will need and how many skeins that you will need for your project. At least the ones that I have done do this.

Miss Crossstitch: I see in plenty of places the number of floss that is required for your pattern. My mermaid and fairy came with the number of skeins needed for each color as well as the quanitites of beads needed.

I know that 123stitch tells you this.
