Outhouse Cross Stitch Patterns
I have been looking high and low for cross stitch patterns for different outhouses. My daughter lives way up north, has an outhouse and so thought if I could stitch a few different looking ones and have it framed would like nice and give everyone something to look at that might be of some interest. Any help in this direction would be greatly appreciated. The patterns should reflect the size of a bookmark. I don't want it to be too large. Also if the outhouses could be in a row or stitched one by one so they can be side by side.
Thank you

Hi Margaret,
You might want to search on Google and type in "outhouse cross stitch patterns book" and then when it gives you the different websites, then tap on the word "Images" and see if you can find what you are searching for. It looked like there was some "outhouse collections" books on there. I can't attest to the bookmark size you are looking for in these collections. Hope this helps!

I Have TO KNOW

Does she actually use her outhouse?

My sister-in-laws grandmother (lived in Ohio) eventually had a toilet put in but there was no bathtub or shower. She kept telling that to my brother-in-law. He didn't believe it. When they went down for is first visit he got quite a surprise!

I think that an outhouse theme would make darling bathroom décor.

Yes.....my daughter does use the outhouse on occasion. She lives on a lake which is also her water source. When temperatures dip and signs of winter are very near the threat of water in the lines possibly getting frozen means the water hose must be removed and the outhouse is the option as far as the facilities are concerned. No water....no flushing.....therefore outhouse gets used over the winter. Mind you that gets drafty and mighty cold. No time to sit and enjoy the newspaper. It's go and get out as quickly as possible. During the summer months however, she does have indoor facilities complete with a shower stall. When I was younger the outhouse was the only thing available all year round. True blessings occurred when indoor plumbing became available in the summer.

I bet she thinks twice before stepping out. I can't even begin to imagine. What does she do when she has diarrhea or is sick? I don't think that I could stitch outhouses, it would constantly bring up images of the discomfort and smell. You're are good mom.
Good luck in finding those patterns.

Dear Texas Stitcher,
Yes indeed she really has to be desperate enough to go out in the cold, snowy, icy, windy, chilly conditions called winter weather. She does scoop in lime which gets rid of the smell but does nothing for the above cold while doing her business. She actually loves where she lives and wouldn't have it any other way. I actually call her my "bush woman" as she does all kinds of different jobs up there from roofing, building docks and decks, painting, yard work, dog walking, landscaping and has set up her own business of house and cottage cleaning. She is actually a "Jill of all trades" and I must say I am very proud of her. She certainly is a go-getter. I love visiting her up there once in the summertime but don't think I can hack the winter months like she does. It takes a special kind of woman that's for sure. I love her dearly and miss out on the opportunity that we can actually visit during the year. The visits are few and far between.
As to the question of what she does when she has diarrhea or when she is sick......I have no idea. I don't ask and I truly don't want to know.....lol.

Margaret - My idea of roughing it the Motel Six. How far does daughter live from the nearest hotel?

I've seen these... but where??? My cousin actually built a really cute out-house for their area Bible camp in South Dakota a few years ago... no running water there except what's trucked in! Oh... I'll keep looking! Wish I had a picture of that, though!

Margaret, and I thought my daughter was handy!!! I'd ask if I could co-parent her but she lives to far away. I always tell people that our daughter can run circles around 5 men and she is so multi-talented and exacting. I'm truly blessed. My sons on the other hand can be flaky as far as home improvements go. I did not mean to be indelicate when I asked the outhouse question. I am a very practical person and having to get out of a warm bed and brace the elements to use the facilities sounds like the ultimate torture. Does she have electricity? Can you stay in touch via computer during the cold months?
Congratulations on such a well turned out child.

to NANCYE G - Unfortunately the Motel nearest her (we don't have Motel 6's in this area) is approximately 75 miles away. I don't think she would be too used to the comforts afforded by what civilization has to offer.
