JOANN'S IN NOVI MICHIGAN
Unfortunately , I had to make a trip to metro Detroit for a funeral last week. It was my 93 year old aunt. The funeral was sad.

There were are few nice things that happened. I got to see most of my first and second cousins. There has not been that many of us together at the same time since my own mother passed away twenty years ago.

I got to have a meal at a wonderful Jewish deli on Telegraph and 15 Mile Road. Don't remember what city that is. Haven't had a great corned beef sandwich since the last time I was "home" for a visit.

I got to go to The Rocking Horse, a cross-stitch shop in downtown Farmington. Naturally, I had to buy a few things. Not too many, I am trying hard to use up what I have.

Then, I went out to an enormous Joann Fabrics in Novi. It is a gigantic two story store. I was a little disappointed. .

Did not buy any cross stitch stuff. I did buy University of Michigan and Detroit Pistons fabric. That was the one thing that was unique to the area. Can't buy that here in St. Louis.

It was a bigger store and the aisles, were wider. They didn't have a larger selection of stuff -- they just had more of the same items. e.g. There may have been five bolts of a particular fabric instead of the two that would be here in St. Louis.

Nice place to visit.

Adele, I looked up your phone number but didn't have the time to try an co-ordinate meeting up with you. Just want you to know that I thought about you. Do you have a small needlework shop that you frequent?

So sorry your aunt passed away.

Glad you got to see family. As we get older it is so hard to see everyone together.

I have never been to Michigan. Is that where you grew up?

xstitcher - I am originally from Detroit. I went to Henry Ford High School. After getting married we lived in Oak Park and Farmington Hills. Both in the Northwest suburbs. Moved to Phoenix in 1997 and St Louis in 2002. Miss Phoenix a lot. Living in St Louis is not much different than living in Detroit. The big difference is not having relatives around. Most of the Detroit area cousins have moved away.

Nancye G so sorry to hear of the loss of your aunt. Growing up we went to Detroit at least once a year to see the Tigers play. My mother was a Tigers fan.

Nancye, I'm sorry to hear about your Aunt's passing. Sounds like she had a nice long life! We lived in Toledo in the early 70's. We were there for almost five years. It was a hub cap for industry then. All of our neighbors were also "transferees". We had several neighbors from Michigan. Nice as could be. We did tour the Henry Ford Museum. I remember his motto over the gate as we entered: "You can pay a man to come to work each day. You cannot pay him for his loyalty."

that is quite a lot of moving.
I have always lived in STL...
My parents, both only children. I have no aunts or uncles. A few distant cousins in AZ.
I do have 2 bros and 1 sis. 1 brother is in CO. You are very lucky to have a large family. A family reunion here is when my brothers and sister get together : )

SuPitt -- If you are serious about University of Michigan fabric - you can find some at Joann.com and fabric. com. I am going to make a yarmulke.

syagel -- You probably attended more Tiger baseball games than I did. I have already made a Tiger yarmulke.

Nancye, please accept my condolences.

Glad to hear that you got a good sandwich. I know what you mean about these huge stores. We all know that bigger is not better just more. :(

A friend had to return from overseas a few weeks ago to attend the funeral of her cousin (53) in Ann Arbor.

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt Nancye.

I wish Novi were closer. Monroe's Jo Ann's closed about 8 years ago. It was small and carried mostly sewing supplies. If I want to go to a Jo Ann's I have to go to Taylor, Ann Arbor, or Toledo, Ohio, and their embroidery supplies have been reduced.

But Monroe has a new Hobby Lobby, so I go there for my supplies, especially their half-off framing supplies (I do the framing myself). They also have all the DMC floss, etc. Monroe also has a Pat Catan's, which I think is an Ohio craft chain. But they cater to other crafts more.

However, my favorite place to go is a small privately owed shop called Timeless Stitches, in Tecumseh, Michigan, about 30 miles west of Monroe. It is a small shop, within an a large building, which has a big privately owned quilting shop upstairs with loads of material and a huge room to sew. There is also a shop that has computer-run quilting machines, and they don't mind if you come in just to watch the sewing machines quilt the layers together in all different patterns. The quilt shop upstairs has classes or just times to get together with others. And the small embroidery shop has a little room and ladies meet twice a week to chat and stitch. If it were not such a drive, I'd join them. I go to Tecumseh about four times a year, just to browse and also go to lunch at the British Tea Garden to have either a pasty or sheperd's pie and tea and scones. I will take my ex-daughter-in-law (we are still good friends) because she is a quilter, or I go with my three librarian friends. They are not stitchers, but don't mind looking through the shops after we have our British lunch. I have not been able to find anyone else who stitches to take with me, and my husband wouldn't be caught dead in a tea garden, even if he is of half English heritage. He also doesn't like hanging out in shops for very long. He is a quick in, pick up what you need, and out type of guy. I like spending a long time there.

And of course, my other sourse of supplies is here at ECS or Nordic Needle, which sells cards and envelopes for displaying/sending your cross stitch. Nordic has decreased their card stock, so I worry that I won't be able to send my friends my cross stitched birthday cards in the future. Herrschner's has them, but I don't like their colored borders--takes away from your stitch work.

Sorry to have rattled on, but if anyone wants to meet me for lunch at the Tecumseh Tea Garden, I'm game. And then Timeless Stitches after........
