What the heck is this and when would you use it?

Uhhhh.....looks like it fits over a person’s forefinger.....
Uhhhhh.....is a pointer- to the nasty little cuss of a floss ‘tail’ that stubbornly refuses to stay under the back of completed stitches-and you point to the area and yell,
‘YOU get under those stitches NOW!’.......no? 😕

Looks medieval! Sorry no clue here. I guess I am curious but
if I haven't needed one at any time will I ever? "If a tree falls in a
forest..." kind of moment.

It's a "laying" tool. You use it to get flat stitches when using more than two threads of floss. Well, somebody does...looks like a pretty bloody accident waiting to happen to me. 😊

Too bad it doesn’t have an ink cartridge to attach to it. You could write out personal checks with it.

LOL!!! I think I'll pass on it - like Maryanne8121 says - looks like I got along just fine without it so far... Thanks, Guys!

That’s interesting. I never knew they were that old.

VCESS is correct. If you go to YouTube, there are tutorial videos in which this tool is used. You "point" it through the loop of floss with your non-needle hand, and it keeps the floss threads flat and in line as the stitch is completed. I've never had a need for this tool, and I'd definitely cause some kind of damage with it...

VCESS is correct. It is a laying tool, and it's definitely a dangerous weapon. This particular one is basically a guitar pick with a big fat needle welded to the inside of it. I still have this one, but there are better ones out there if you feel you need flatter stitches. I used them for a while on a couple of those big Thea Gouverneur cityscapes where you want your stitches to look really good if you're going to spend all that money for the kits. Then decided if I just dropped my needle and let the floss untwist, I could get flat stitches without a trolley needle. Duh! Been doing that ever since.
