Anybody Else Entering Projects in Local Fairs?
I just sent my 10 projects to be entered in our regional fair (the fairgrounds are only a couple of hundred yards away from my office - and I'm on the second floor of my building, so I get to see the setting up and taking down of the carnival each year) ... and wondered if anybody else enters their work in local fairs? I am trying to do my part to keep the art alive and interesting - especially for young people!

On the one hand, I don't really care about ribbons or rosettes - but on the other hand it's always interesting to see what others are stitching, and what the judges like. Last year, I entered a cross stitch piece that I stitched over 30 years ago - it was my first cross-stitch project, actually. Someone else entered the EXACT same pattern, on a different color cloth. The difference the cloth color made in the final product was fascinating, and illuminating. And it amazed me that the same pattern from long ago was entered the same year.

Would love to hear of others' experiences! :)

The last time I checked our state fair rules, you had to have finished the entry within a year of the entry. I only had 3 that weren't already gifted...and they were promised for approaching events. Thought about it...but I'm not really wanting this hobby to be a competition. At least back then, I didn't. 😊

I have three that I could enter but, for some reason (fear of failure?) I am wary. I have an additional one but I did it 15 years ago and put the date on it and it is a wall hanging. So, wishy, washy me doesn't know if she will do it, finally. So for me, it is on one hand fear of failure and on the other I DO WANT A RIBBON OR ROSETTES. Perplexingly Pam.

Check the rules, Pam! You know everything else about the state fair has changed! I'm sure the entry date is almost on you!
Go for it! You can't win if you don't enter! And you can't fail! Everybody that enters are winners! Just not everybody gets ribbons! 😊 If you win, we celebrate! 😊

I tnink Pam ought to go for it. Alas, I am not very competitive and it would
blow my cover as I am a closet x-stitcher! Man, are they going to freak
when I die and they find all this stuff!
@ Bermuda, My plan exactly! You get it!

Pam,
Give it a go! We all fear of failure and if you enter your project, you’re still a winner to us! 😃

Maryann8121,
Hey, let them find your stash after you have passed on to the ‘other side’. They will be first shocked, then delighted and then in awe of you! 😃

We have the Red River Exhibition here every June. They haven't had a handicraft section for around 15 years now but I did enter a few times. The first time I entered was the Angel of Hope - Point of Praise $2.00 prize) as they didn't like the frame and a Nativity Sampler which won a First ($10.00 prize), Award of Merit ($10.00 prize) and a Sheena's Gallery prize ($10.00 gift card) - not bad for a 75 cent entry fee each. Another year I won a 3rd in a drawn thread sampler and a First and a Point of Praise for a knitted pendant pouch - 1,900 seed beads, DMC pearl cotton #8 and on 1.25 mm needles. One year I entered the Guardian Angel by L&L but didn't win anything because that year the judges didn't give anyone who used metallic a prize. I didn't notice until someone pointed it out to me. Odd.

Good luck to anyone entering items in fairs. Let us know how you did.

We have so much hoopla going on about the fair here, I’m staying away.

The only thing I don’t like about the judging is that it sounds like it is too ‘subjective’ ie. What one judge really likes, another judge doesn’t,.... don’t the judges have any ‘standards’ for judging counted cross stitch....and, excuse me, not in the running to win because a cross Stitch project has ‘mettalics’ in it??? PUH- LEEESE! 😠

Here, in NoCo, the Weld County fair doesn't have restrictions aside from living in Colorado. I enter every year. A friend entered 13... YES 13!... items this year. Aside from 12 blue ribbons, she got 2 Reserved Champions and 1 Grand Champion. Boy, do I feel like a slacker!
