Floss Education
Well, here I am, learning about floss again. I know a lot about DMC. It was not named after its founders, Mr. D., M.,&C.
In some folks who like to teach us all they know about this long staple Egyptian cotton, I prefer accuracy. It was indeed named after the founders, Mr. Dolfuss & Mr. Meigs,. What about C.? I am not leaving him out. He is really Mr. Companie, the French for Company. Please don't continue telling others that it was named after the THREE founders. Reality is that there were only two founders. You can read this on older floss labels.
I was sent floss by an older (I am feeling old today) stitcher that I will donate to a local thrift shop. The labels told me that two skeins were made by J&P Coats and are 8.7 meters or 9 yards. I am familiar with these guys. My grandma said they were brothers, but I don't know that. Maybe they were a married couple!
Then, I have one skein labelled "Star Six Strand" by "American Thread Co.". Anyone know about them? Please speak up.
The biggest bunch of floss is "mercerized embroidery cotton" by "ART 21" sold by KMart. I am thinking they were from the 1950s or early 1960s because the price on the KMart tag read 15 cents. FIFTEEN CENTS! Yikes.
You can determine, perhaps, that I may have develop a bit of OCD over a lifetime of stitching. My great-grandmother, my Nana, was of German descent, spoke German and French because she immigrated to the U.S. by moving from Alsace-Lorraine (an area of Germany near the French border) to become a French-Canadian. She picked up English as a child in Canada. Alsace Lorraine still debates whether they are French or German. She was a devoted fan of DMC. After all, she
spoke German! She did not remember much French.
