Birth Record Fabric and GlissenGloss and Colorwash flosses Questions
Hello!
I'm looking at ordering fabric to make the birth record. What size is the final product/what size fabric to you recommend getting to sew the birth record on?

Also, I use DMC colors, which I saw the numbers are available in the booklet. However, are there DMC numbers for the GlissenGloss and Colorwash flosses? I'm not sure I've used those types of threads before.. just trying to make sure I have/order everything I need to get started!

Thanks!

I've never run into Colorwash, but the one time I had a pattern that called for GlissenGloss it was white and it had sort of an opalescent look to it. DMC has their Light Effects line but I don't know if they would have anything comparable to the colors you need.

You might need to order some of those items from Stoney Creek. I bought some SC patterns and found the easiest way to get those extra items in one place was to order from them. The info for doing that is on the inside cover of the pattern book. Wishing you happy stitching. Karen

ECS sells Glissen Gloss Colorwash Floss so you can see it here. Glissen Gloss Colorwash Floss is a variegated silk floss. It may be difficult to find a cotton floss that gives the same effect. It all depends upon where/how it is used in the design as to the impact using a regular DMC color as a substitute would have. I doubt there is a DMC substitute given for the Glissen Gloss but that is just my guess as a stitcher.

The size of fabric will depend upon what count of fabric you want to stitch on. The description indicates the stitch count of the birth record is 140 X 208. Divide these numbers by the stitch count of your fabric to get the dimensions of the design and then add AT LEAST 2" to all four sides to get the size of fabric you need. Many of us prefer to use 3" on all sides to make sure there is plenty for framing/finishing.

Thank you all! I'm excited to get this project started for a friend that is expecting their first baby. I've been stitching for 20 years (my grandmother taught me :-) ) I've done a ton of projects, but I've only had to buy fabric once or twice. I was also thinking of buying the specialty floss from the site in order to ensure I have the correct colors/material. Thank you for explaining the differences between the types of floss.

Thank you, also, for the tips on figuring out fabric size. I believe they said 28 count White Monaco. That calculated to about 5x7, so I think I may order the booklet and specialty floss and look at the details inside to ensure I get the correct size.

Happy Stitching All!
Diane :-)

Diane, Keep in mind that your calculations are for using 28 count over 1 thread. That will make for very small stitches, which may be what you want. If you stitch over 2, which is done frequently on the higher counts, it would be equivalent to 14 count and be double what you calculated. I didn't explain that earlier and wanted to make sure you realize that. With your stitching experience, I would guess you do but wanted to make sure. Good Luck. Nancy
