Am I Being a Big Baby?
I'm going in to the eye clinic this morning to have my eyes measured for cataract surgery. This is not the surgery...yet, just measuring for the correct size of the new lens implant. I have a case of extreme anxiety right now and I'm sure it's going to get worse the closer to surgery I get. Surgery hasn't even been scheduled yet. I'll probably know by the end of the week when it will be. I'm not new to surgery. I've had at least five prior surgeries, mostly broken bones, and I wasn't as concerned about any of them (well, maybe one of them) as I am about this eye surgery. What if I'm worse after surgery than I am now? What if I can't stitch any more after surgery? That's my biggest concern.

Susiebelle, I have had cataracts in both eyes removed and was anxious about that as well. Turned out it was really a piece of cake. They did one at a time, a few weeks apart and the result is, I only need glasses for close work, like stitching, reading, stitching, computer, stitching. All the drops were a little inconvenient, but that's about it.

Good luck with your surgery and try not to worry. It'll all be fine.

Susiebelle,
My mom had cataract surgery and doesn't wear glasses anymore at all. She had worn glasses since she was 12 years old! I totally understand your anxiety and I think it is perfectly normal to be a little afraid. Good luck with the surgery and maybe after surgery you will be able to to the smaller counted cross stitch that you would never have even thought to attempt before!

I think your anxiety is totally normal ad understandable! Our eyes are so precious, and the major way we all interact with the world. When you are a visual person, as stitchers are, it's even more crucial to our lives.

My thoughts are with you. I'm sure it will go really well 😷

Susiebelle7, I understand your worry but try not to get upset. All you have to do is sit and the nurse/technician will do the work, it takes about 45 minutes so all you have to do is sit still.
Good Luck! You will be so happy when the surgery is finished.

Susiebelle, you are not being a baby being worried about something such as surgery is natural. I agree with craftydiva, it can be hard not to worry about something as important as our eyes especially for us stitchers. I have known several people who have had it done and love the change it has made in the way they see, try and "focus" on the positive outcome. ;) Pun intended to make you smile.

Susiebelle7, my husband had always worn glasses. After the second surgery, the first thing he did was buy a pair of cool sunglasses. It is always scary to have your eyes "messed" with especially being a stitcher, You will be happy with the outcome but since you have an appt. this aft, why not just ask about the procedure while you are there?

Susiebelle I have just gone through this procedure this summer. It is super simple and it has been so perfected you will laugh at yourself when it is all behind you. There is NO pain at all. Since you are so anxious, they will offer you something to help you relax, do consider it. Since the entire process takes several weeks, I found I could still stitch on larger count (14 & 18) even during the healing period when my vision was a little "wonkie". Cataract surgery did not restore perfect vision for me, but the cataracts prevented my eyes from being further corrected. Anyway, now with my new glasses there's no stopping me. By now you are probably home from your consultation. I hope your fears have lessened. Keep us posted.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. My appointment this morning went very well and I (and my husband who went with me) asked lots of questions and got lots of info in return. I have worn glasses since 9th grade but switched to contacts in my early 20s. After my most recent eye exam (in April) I found that as hard as they were trying (4 or more different pairs of trial contacts over several months) they could not correct my distance vision to a point where I wasn't seeing double or blurred. That's when I finally had to admit I needed the surgery. I feel I shouldn't be driving. My near vision is fine, I'm still stitching on small count fabric with no magnification. I had heard that deadening of the eye could be done by drops or injection, and that scared the heck out of me. An injection near the eye?? The tech assured me they only use drops. However, when I got home this afternoon, there was a message from the clinic to call them. It seems the tech forgot to do one exam, ocular something. So I have another appointment on Thursday to get that done. So I probably won't find out when surgery will be until early next week now.

Susiebelle,
When you read this, you are now reading words from the biggest scaredy-cat,
“DON’T TOUCH MY EYES OR NEAR MY EYES”,
fat bag of nerves-like-jello,
“Cowardus-supremus”
Willy-Wonka, Willy-nilly CHICKEN _SS you could or would EVER have the occasion to meet in your ENTIRE LIFE....
Who will probably be going in this fall to have cataract surgery myself. Now if I can do it, after having read my self-description above, you can do it!!!
The other stitchers are correct, it’s normal to be nervous and, as they said, because we use our eyes 👀 so much, we have a sensitivity to others,
including professionals, working on or near them.
Verbalize your anxiety concerns to the medical staff and see how they can assist you with it.
Did you ever read about how I had a small cyst - located by the tear duct- that needed to be removed about 25+years ago. I told the medical staff about my increasing fear and anxiety, the doctor ordered a dose of “Prince Valium”and 45-50 minutes later, I was inviting EVERYONE to come watch them take the cyst off and “could I have a mirror to watch”. I had a patch over the treated eye and
told DH, “I’ll drive us home.” Which DH nixed on the spot.
AND I felt like a Mr. Roger’s clone on the entire ride back home because I wanted “To see the WHOLE Neighborhood!” And where’s my sweater?
We’ll all be here to support you lady, go for it!! 😃😃
