color of fabric
I wonder if doing this on black fabric would be a good choice. It doesn't say what color it was originally done on.

Berry, hi, I am Pam a stitcher in this chat room. Is this an all over pattern? If it is, you could use any color. If it isn't,I probably would do it in black. For most, if not all, black is a little hard to work on. You need really good lighting, some people put a white cloth behind so they can see the holes, or white tissue paper. I have worked with black and have loved the results even though it was a pain. On Monday, you could call ECS at 8008008517 and they can tell you. Good luck. Hope you come back and share your work. I found the pattern and could not tell if it is an all over or not. The SKU NUMBER is 1822 and uses 76 colors. Good luck.

Looking at the number of black flosses, I'm guessing that they did not work it on black fabric. You may, of course, but I'm not climbing out on that limb! 😊

Being this is an Artecy pattern, I would assume it will be a cover-all pattern, & like VCESS says, the number of black skeins, should be another clue. So that means you could use any color fabric you choose, but I think I would go with something maybe in a grey, easier to work on than black. Also, I would not use white, as you would more than likely get some show through in the black area of the design. It's all what you preference is.
It's a beautiful pattern, so have fun with it.

Working on black fabric is harder, but you would save a lot of stitching time. Plus a lot of black floss. Best wishes whatever you decide!

I would buy a little piece of black fabric and try stitching on it to help with your decision.

I detect more of a navy blue in that background than black. And, there are a lot of the dark blues in the pattern. If you are that confused, just send off a question to the manufacturer. Looks like you might save doing about 1/4th of all the stitches!
You can surely wait for them to answer. I think it may be an all-over pattern, in which you can just stitch Mr. Dragon and his flam9ng breath. It would certainly make him stand out even more!
