clubs or meetings
Is there any kind of club for stitchers like myself in my area ? Scarsdale Ny ? Wow I would love that.

Check in Scarsdale for a โ€˜Senior Center on Agingโ€™. Many times they have group meetings (weekly/ monthly) related to different crafts such as knitting/ crocheting get-together groups. They would probably be glad to have you join their group!

Check with your local library, they might maintain a list of hobby groups in the area. They might also have suggestions on how to start a group! Also, check with any local needlework shops in your area. There used to be a shop in my area that had 'stitch-ins' a few times a year, I think they were usually on a weekend afternoon but once or twice a year they'd have overnight stitch-ins. Happy stitching!

Wow! I love this idea, but figured clubs like this died along with tea parties. I'm in Milwaukee, WI and would love to find something. I will definitely see if the local senior center and library has anything. Great idea!

Also, try the needlework guild...

I talked with our Senior Resource Center. While they have inexpensive ($2) lunches and are responsible for a Day Care Center, exercise class and bring in speakers for free lectures, they have never had even just an hour scheduled for any craft hobbies like cross stitch, knitting, embroidery or crocheting!
I was stunned because they get funds from both the state and from the county. They have lots of free space spread over 2 to 3 buildings. They told me that I could find a time that is amenable to THEIR schedule, notify the public and keep records for them because, of course, they need to account for it in their budget.
I just wanted a little bunch of women, not a job.

Our city senior center will schedule anything you want to schedule, put your meeting on the website schedule, field all questions they can answer, only releases your name if you ok it. ๐Ÿ˜„ You do have to furnish a group of some kind to remain on the calendar and somebody has to reschedule each month. ๐Ÿ˜„

VCESS -- there is more work than most people would think to co-ordinate an activity like that. There would be responses like -- can't you do it on Tuesday instead of Monday; do it in the morning, not afternoon; can I donate unwanted supplies; etc. Also, there would have to be someone to be responsible to make sure the room is cleaned up afterwards.

I go with a friend to a local senior residence once a week. She is there to "teach" knitting. Anyone is welcome to drop in and work on any craft they choose. One "member" has assisted me with crochet. So far, no other cross-stitchers.

My library has started a drop-in craft get-together the third Wednesday evening of every month. Haven't been to a meeting yet. None of the staff seems to know anything about it other than it is on the calendar. Other branches have groups on different days and times.

Think about contacting Michaels or Joanns. They usually have classrooms that they might allow that kind of activity. They may even offer discounts if you purchase supplies.

Phooey! The group's are very loosely organized. From what I saw they want a sharing/learning time, not a tea party. There is no serving of refreshments...it's bring your own lidded drinks. if someone wanted cookies, she brought them. The only cleaning is to empty the trash. It wasn't a meeting, it was a gathering of friendly women without children or pets, showing off their newest projects/problems/gadgets. Two women were working crochet and all were discussing/showing their quilting squares, new fabrics...no cross stitch...phooey. ๐Ÿ˜Š
