Stick and Stab vs Sewing Method
I had run across this before but never had anybody to ask. Is there anybody that uses the sewing method of cross stitch instead of what I call "stick and stab". The article that I ran across said that it is faster and easier than stick and stab. I don't think that I could use any other method and I question the evenness of using the sewing method but I could be wrong. Just interested. TIA. Pam

Hi Pam,
I tried to use the ‘sewing method’ quite a few years ago after cross stitching ‘stick and stab’ for some years. I never could get used to the sewing method so I went back to the stick and stab which was/is a more comfortable
Method for me.

Thanks, Bermuda. I agree. After all these years even if it was better, faster, etc. , I still wouldn't use it. Old dog, new tricks, nah. Pam

I'm a two handed stick and stabber :-) Left hand on top, right hand underneath. Agree with your evenness question for sewing method.

Marz, I do the opposite for some reason. I am right hand on top, left hand on bottom. I don't know why.

I think sewing method works best if you don't use any kind of hoop or frame. I think there needs to be some slack in the fabric for this method to be effective. I have used it a little in large sections of a single color and no hoop. Just one stitcher's observations. - Marsha

Hi Pam,
I agree with Marsha, you need a little slack for the sewing method. I have used it a little and have no problem with evenness, but I am used to the stick and stab. I go faster with the sewing method but I like the stick and stab (just old, I guess). :-)

I prefer the sewing method. Very rarely use a frame and never use a hoop.

I was taught the stick and stab method as a child, and have used it ever since. I don't care how much faster or easier the sewing method is. I'm not stitching in competition. I just want my fabric as tight as I can get it. I'm not a two-handed stitcher. I don't use hoops, either, I prefer Q-Snaps or scroll frames.

I kind of switch back and forth. Sometimes with the sewing method I can angle the needle correctly to get it through the next hole. So, sometimes, I stick and stab. Never really thought that it made a difference.
