Babcock was born in 1801, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Clark) Babcock. In 1820, she married Clark Brown of Hopkinton, Rhode Island (then New York State). They settled in Morrisville, New York, where Mr. Brown was a harness maker and merchant. Between 1821 and 1840 they had nine children.
