Resources & Help for Cross Stitch Patterns
If you love the look of cross stitch but feel overwhelmed by all the choices, this is the place to start.Below are a few quick guides and links to help you choose a pattern, match it with fabric and floss, and get answers to the most common questions.
How to choose a cross stitch pattern:
Start with the theme.Think about where the finished piece will live (nursery, kitchen, seasonal décor) or who you are stitching for. Then browse our pattern category list to help you narrow things down.
Decide how much time you want to spend. If you want a fast finish, look for smaller designs, fewer colors, and less background stitching. For a long-term big project, full coverage and larger samplers are great choices.
Choose a style you enjoy. We carry everything from traditional samplers and cottages to modern typography, cute characters, and full-color artwork. If you find a design you like, spend a little time browsing other patterns by the designer. You may find something you like even better!
With your theme, size, and style in mind, all that’s left is to find the pattern that makes you say, "Yes!!!That’s the one I want to stitch next."
Keep in mind your stitching experience:
Beginner-friendly patterns usually have larger blocks of the same color, fewer backstitches, and are charted for standard fabrics like 14-count Aida.Little stitchers can benefit from larger weaves like 6, 8 & 11-count Aida.Look for phrases like "quick & easy" or smaller stitch counts in the description.Fewer colors in the design can be helpful for beginners as well.
Intermediate patterns may include more blended colors, backstitching, or fractional stitches. They are great if you are comfortable reading charts and want a bit more detail without a giant time commitment.
Advanced and full-coverage pieces often use higher-count fabrics and many colors for realistic shading. These are wonderful “forever projects” but plan on more stitching time and a good light and magnifier.
Fabric Count & Project Size:
Every product page lists the stitch count and recommended fabric, but you can stitch on any fabric you like. The count basically determines the stitches per inch on your fabric. So, the same design stitched on 14-count Aida will be larger than on 18-count Aida.Higher fabric counts mean smaller stitches and a more detailed look.
On higher-count fabrics like 28 & 32 count linens, you’ll often see instructions to stitch "over 2".This simply means each X covers two fabric threads in each direction instead of one.So a 28-count linen stitched over 2 behaves like stitching on 14-count Aida, and 32-count over 2 is similar in size to 16-count.In general, many fabrics 24-count and higher are stitched over 2 (unless the chart says otherwise), which keeps your stitches a comfortable size while still giving you the finer, more elegant look from the high-count fabric.
Floss, Fabric, & Other Supplies:
Remember when you are looking at cross stitch patterns, you purchase the chart and then choose your own materials. Many patterns at Everything Cross Stitch include a materials list so you can add the fabric and floss to your cart right from the pattern page.If you find a favorite pattern without a supply list yet, just Contact Us and we will do our best to get those supplies listed.
If you would like to choose supplies other than those recommend by the designer, we have you covered.Below are quick links to our other cross stitch items.
